Deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale runs on two advantages: the Gulf Stream sits a couple of miles off the Port Everglades inlet, and the city has one of the deepest charter fleets in the country. Sailfish on the kite in winter, mahi and tuna offshore in summer, and a serious swordfish fishery are all within a short run of the beach. The field is large and uneven, so this page ranks the Fort Lauderdale charters worth booking on our published method, and names the ones it set aside and why.

The fishing is a Gulf Stream and reef story. The current funnels sailfish, mahi mahi, wahoo, blackfin tuna, and kingfish past the city, the deep water out front holds swordfish on the day and night trips, and the reefs and wrecks give up yellowtail and mutton snapper and grouper. The season to plan around is sailfish, the winter prize from November into April, caught on kites and usually released. Confirm the current limits and the grouper closure with Florida FWC before a season specific trip, since the rules shift year to year.

What you catch and when

Fort Lauderdale fishes year round, but the target changes with the calendar. The cooler months, roughly November through April, are sailfish season, when the fish push down the reef line and the boats kite fish for them under a 63 inch minimum and a one fish limit. From late spring into fall the troll switches to mahi mahi past the reef edge, with Florida’s Atlantic limit at 5 per person at a 20 inch fork minimum. Swordfish is the local specialty, targeted year round on daytime deep-drop and night trips, with a 47 inch minimum and a one fish per person limit under a federal HMS permit. Wahoo, blackfin tuna, and kingfish run through the year, and the reefs hold snapper all year. The one closure to note is Atlantic shallow-water grouper, shut January 1 to April 30 in 2026, so the winter bottom box leans on snapper.

The boats and operators

The private fleet is a set of sportfishers in the 35 to 52 foot range, mostly Hatteras and Viking convertibles with cabins and the range for a swordfish or Bahamas trip, that you book whole. Marlin My Darlin, Top Shot, Don’t Tell Mom, Taco’s Hooked Up, and Bay Breeze run classic convertible sportfishers; SoFlo a smaller Bertram; and Good Hit a fleet of fast center consoles with a shared option. They dock at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center on the beach, the Lauderdale Marina and 15th Street Fisheries on SE 15th Street, the Hilton Marina on 17th Street, and the 301 Seabreeze dock. The drift side is Fishing Headquarters, whose 85 foot Catch My Drift and 55 foot Mary B III sell seats by the person on the reefs.

How the field ranks

The field is deep and splits into private offshore sportfishers, which take the top seven spots, and the port’s main drift boat below them. At the top is Marlin My Darlin at 8.1, a roomy Hatteras out of Bahia Mar with the deepest review record in the port and a full offshore and swordfish menu. SoFlo Sportfishing is second at 8.0, the highest-rated boat in the port, an owner-run operation whose captain reviewers call a true pro, on a smaller Bertram that is the only thing holding it back. Taco’s Hooked Up follows at 7.6, a veteran captain who has fished here since the 1960s on a classic Hatteras with a full swordfish menu, the older hull its main limit. Good Hit is fourth at 7.5, a deep, well-reviewed center console fleet with the broadest menu and a shared option, marked down on a rotating captain roster, and Bay Breeze at 7.4 is a third-generation captain on a capable 43 foot Viking with posted prices.

Below them, Don’t Tell Mom at 7.2 runs a 46 foot Hatteras with a licensed 100 ton master and posted private and shared prices, on a modest review base, and Top Shot at 7.1 is a long-established Bahia Mar operation on a big 52 foot Hatteras with a walk-on seat, held back by a thinner verifiable record. At the foot of the ranking, Fishing Headquarters at 6.5 is the port’s big drift boat, the cheapest and most available way out, pulled down by party-boat crowding and a licensing flag worth knowing about. Trip types and what they cost

Fort Lauderdale fishes two ways, and the price gap is wide. A walk-on drift seat on the Fishing Headquarters party boat is the cheap way out, about $40 per person for a half day, sold per person with rods, bait, and the license included. A private charter is booked by the whole boat for up to six anglers, from about $850 to $950 for a half day up to $1,650 to $2,600 for a full offshore or swordfish day, and only works out per person when you fill the deck with your own group. Getting there and what to bring

Bahia Mar sits on the barrier island at 801 Seabreeze Boulevard, just south of Las Olas and the beach, with the other docks a few minutes away on SE 15th and 17th Streets across the Intracoastal. Paid public parking is available at the marinas, so arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure to park and check in. Bring sunscreen, a hat, polarized sunglasses, a soft cooler with ice for your fillets, food and drinks since most boats carry water but not a meal, and motion sickness medication if you are unsure of your stomach.
