Clearwater runs one of the deepest deep sea fishing fleets on Florida’s Gulf coast, and it splits cleanly in two. The famous head boats, the Queen Fleet and the Double Eagle, sell seats by the person and put a half day of grouper and snapper within almost any budget. Alongside them is a strong set of private sportfishers you book by the whole boat for a named captain and a run to better ground. What you catch and when

The fishing here is a bottom story. The Gulf ledges and hard bottom off Pinellas County hold red grouper all year, the reefs give up mangrove, lane, and vermilion snapper, hogfish, amberjack, and grunts through the seasons, and king mackerel run the nearshore on the troll in spring and fall. The two swings to plan around are red snapper, the summer prize that comes on the longer trips, and gag grouper, which is tightly limited and closed for most of 2026. Confirm the current dates with Florida FWC before you book a season specific trip, since the reef seasons shift year to year.

The boats and operators

Two head boats anchor the fleet. The Queen Fleet runs the 90 foot catamaran Super Queen and the Gulf Queen for up to 150 anglers, and the Double Eagle fishes two catamarans, including an 88 foot boat, with long range trips no other head boat here offers. The private side is deeper than most Gulf ports: the 42 and 43 foot sportfishers at Stella, the two 34 foot boats at Reel Deal, the fast 32 foot Fisheye, and the larger, Coast Guard inspected Gulfstream boats that carry the big groups. All of them work out of the Clearwater Beach Municipal Marina at 25 Causeway Boulevard.

Trip types and what they cost

Clearwater fishes two ways, and the price gap between them is wide. A walk on seat on a head boat is the cheap way out: about $67 per person for a half day on the Queen Fleet and $69 to $99 on the Double Eagle, sold per person, with a rod rental and marina parking on top. The half day stays within about 10 miles for an hour or so of fishing, while the all day runs 20 to 30 miles to better grouper ground. A private charter is booked by the whole boat, from around $950 for a half day up to $2,400 or more for an extended offshore run, which only works out per person when you fill the deck with your own group of four to six. How to pick the right trip

If it is your first trip, or you are watching the budget, take a head boat half day and keep expectations to a sociable few hours of bottom fishing. If you want more fish and more time, the all day or a private half day is the step up. For a group of four to six who want their own captain, a private sportfisher is worth the money, and for a serious offshore or overnight run at red snapper and bigger grouper, book Stella or a Double Eagle long range trip. Match the trip length to the season, because the long trips are what reach red snapper and the better grouper ground.

Getting there and what to bring

Clearwater Beach sits west of Tampa and St. Petersburg across the bay, about a 40 minute drive from Tampa International Airport. The charter docks are at the Clearwater Beach Municipal Marina by the roundabout at the foot of the Memorial Causeway, with paid public parking that fills early on weekends, so arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure. Bring sunscreen, a hat, polarized sunglasses, a soft cooler with ice for your fillets, and motion sickness medication if you are unsure of your stomach.
