The boats
Getaway runs three boats, and which one you fish depends on the trip. Another Getaway is a 46 foot Hatteras that sleeps 6 for an overnight; The Getaway is a 36 foot Hatteras for the standard reef and troll days; and the Last Hook is a 43 foot Tiara Express, the fastest of the three and the one used for the deep drop runs that reach 50 or more miles out. All three carry air conditioned cabins, heads, and full Furuno and Simrad electronics, and all take up to 6 anglers, the Coast Guard limit on a six pack boat. The fleet is well found and capable across the range, though the boats are different ages and sizes, so confirm which hull your trip uses.
The fishing and what you target
Getaway fishes the full Orange Beach spread. The standard reef trips work the artificial reef zone for red snapper, vermilion snapper, amberjack, and triggerfish, with king mackerel and wahoo on the troll. The deep drop is the boat’s signature: the 12 hour trip runs out past the reef and drops in 300 to 1,000 feet for yellowedge and snowy grouper and golden tilefish, deep water fish that a day boat cannot reach. Red snapper is the in season headline, fished on the federal for-hire season, which runs June 1 to October 26 in 2026. Match the trip to the target: a half day for a quick reef box, a full day or the deep drop for the bigger, deeper fish.
Trips and prices
Getaway sells by the whole boat for up to 6 anglers, private only. The posted rates run $1,000 for a 4 hour trip, $1,600 for 6 hours, $2,000 for 8 hours, $2,700 for 10 hours, $3,000 for a 12 hour day, and $3,500 for the 12 hour deep drop. The fishing license, bait, and tackle are included, fish cleaning is free on the shorter trips and about $0.30 per pound on the longer ones, and a $10 administration fee holds the reservation rather than a large deposit. Getaway is owner run, with founder Captain Don McPherson joined by Captain Josh Lesley, who bought into the business in 2023 after starting as a deckhand in 2010, and Captain Gary Sanford, who has run Gulf boats since 2001. Recent reviews name Josh and the deckhand Cory most often, and the recurring themes are patience with beginners and children, steady catch rates, and a clean, comfortable boat.
