The boat
The Sealutions is a 25 foot Parker 2520 pilothouse, built in 2006 and repowered with a single 300 horsepower Yamaha in 2020 that cruises it to around 32 knots. It is a small boat run well: a pilothouse cabin with a berth out of the weather, a high bow rail, a tuna tower, and a Simrad sounder and chartplotter package that finds the bass on the reefs and marks the bait offshore. Four anglers is the legal limit, and on a 25 foot hull four is the right number, with room to work a fish without crossing lines. The honest limit is the size itself. The Parker handles the run to Catalina and San Clemente, but it is a wetter, busier ride in a building afternoon swell than a 38 foot cabin boat, and there is no real shelter for a group on a long day beyond the small cabin.
The fishing and what you target
Sealutions fishes the full Newport spread, scaled to the trip you book. Close to home it works the Santa Ana River jetty and the Newport artificial reef for calico and sand bass, barracuda, halibut, and rockfish when the groundfish season is open, the bread and butter of the half day. The three quarter day and the Catalina run reach yellowtail and white seabass in spring and summer, and the seasonal offshore banks trips, June into December on the inner banks and May into December on the outer, target bluefin and yellowfin tuna and mahi mahi when the warm water and the fish push up the coast. Sealutions sells by the whole boat for up to four anglers, private only, and posts a rate for every trip, which is rare enough on this coast to be the boat’s signature. A 5 hour half day is $850 for the boat, a 7 hour three quarter day $1,050, a 10 hour Catalina day $1,600, and the 11 hour San Clemente run $2,000, with the seasonal offshore banks trips at $1,750 to $2,000. Rods, reels, tackle, live bait, and catch cleaning are included, and cancellation is free with three days notice. The one add on is the California fishing license, which the state requires every angler 16 and older to carry, bought onboard or in advance. Captain Shannon McGraw owns and runs the boat, an Orange County native who has fished these waters for decades, and the review trail reads the way an owner operator’s should: the recurring notes are a clean, well kept boat, good gear, and a patient, knowledgeable captain who puts people on fish and teaches a first timer rather than leaving them to it. The record runs to around 190 reviews near a 4.9 on FishingBooker, a deep, consistent base. The honest qualifier is its shape. Almost all of it lives on the one booking platform, where reviews come only from completed bookings, so the boat has a lighter footprint on the open review sites than the landings do, and the near spotless rating is less stress tested than a number spread across Google and TripAdvisor would be.
