Underneath all of it is the reef and wreck fishing: yellowtail, mangrove, and mutton snapper and amberjack hold through the year, Atlantic grouper closes January 1 to April 30, and hogfish opens May 1 to October 31 at a 16 inch fork minimum. The Marathon fleet sorts by size and shelter. The Marathon Lady is the only big party boat, a 73 foot inspected head boat at Vaca Cut. Among the private boats, Infinite Blue’s 50 foot SeaRay is the rare cabin sportfisher with air conditioning and a head, the most comfortable boat in the port, while Main Attraction runs three offshore boats and Big Game, Top Notch, and Sweet E’Nuf each fish a single capable sportfisher or center console in the 31 to 34 foot range. The center consoles are fast and fine for the reef and the closer offshore grounds but open to the weather on a long run to the Hump or the swordfish grounds, where a cabin boat rides better. Most are owner run or run by a small roster of captains, and on this coast the captain’s read of the grounds makes the day more than the hull does.

The Marathon field is deep for a small port, and it splits into private sportfishers and the one party boat. The two single boat specialists follow, level at 7.6 and split on the tie break. Big Game Sportfishing ranks third, the owner operator boat under Captain Ariel Medero, fishing these grounds since 1994, where you get the named captain every trip, pulled back by unposted prices and a single hull. Top Notch Sportfishing is fourth, a clean, well run boat under a 100 ton captain with the clearest posted prices in the port, its limit an open center console on a long run. Fifth is Sweet E’Nuf Charters at 7.4, a focused offshore and deep drop boat under a nationally recognized Master captain with posted prices, marked down on the thinnest public review trail of the ranked field. Last is the Marathon Lady at 6.9, the 1958 party boat institution and the only walk-on option, cheap and sociable but a mixed, crowded reef trip rather than an offshore run. Marathon sits at the midpoint of the Keys, about a two hour drive south of Miami on the Overseas Highway, with the marinas spread along Vaca Key between roughly Mile Marker 47 and 55.
