Deep sea fishing in Key Largo runs on a simple advantage: it is the first Keys port off the mainland, so the reef and the Gulf Stream sit a short run apart, and the charter fleet is deeper than the town’s size suggests. The mile marker 100 docks alone hold a 54 foot Bertram, a clutch of 40 foot sportfishers, a new Contender, and the only party boat in the Upper Keys. The fishing is a reef and Gulf Stream story. The current funnels sailfish, mahi mahi, blackfin tuna, wahoo, and king mackerel past the island, the deep water out front gives up swordfish on the day and night trips, and the reefs and wrecks hold yellowtail, mutton, and mangrove snapper, grouper, and amberjack. The season to plan around is sailfish, the winter prize from December into March, caught on live bait off the reef and usually released. Mahi take over from spring into fall. What you catch and when

Key Largo fishes year round, but the target changes with the calendar. The cooler months, roughly December through March, are sailfish season and the calmest billfish window, when the boats live bait for them a few miles off the reef; most sailfish are released under a 63 inch minimum and a one fish limit. From spring into early fall the troll switches to mahi mahi in the bluewater past the reef, with Florida’s Atlantic limit at 5 per harvester per day at a 20 inch fork minimum. Round Up’s 54 foot Bertram is the biggest and most comfortable hull for the long offshore run, the 40 foot class boats from Anglers Choice, Coastal Dreams, and Sea Spirit are the comfortable middle, and Reel Deal and Lock It Up are the open center consoles, faster and wetter, better for the reef and a calm offshore day. The Sailors Choice is the one true party boat, a 65 foot Coast Guard inspected head boat that takes up to about 49 anglers on a single reef drift. A theme worth knowing before you book: several of the private operations run a rotating roster of captains, so on those boats the skipper you draw can vary, while the owner run boats put the same captain on the bridge each trip.

How the field ranks

The field splits into a deep private fleet, a value center console or two, and one party boat. At the top is Anglers Choice Sport Fishing at 8.0, the best equipped private boat in the port, a 40 foot flybridge with a thermal imaging camera and the deepest booking record here, marked down only because that record sits almost entirely on the booking platform and the boat runs a rotating captain roster. Key Largo Sportfishing is second at 7.9, the clean, well run 38 foot Two Reel out of Garden Cove with a patient captain and the most rounded review record among the private boats, dinged only on a catch rate that dips on the slow days. Reel Deal Charter Fishing follows at 7.8, the newest and fastest boat in the port, a 2025 Contender run by a lifelong local captain, held below the cabin boats by its open hull.

In the middle sit four strong but flawed boats. Coastal Dreams Fishing at 7.7 is the comfortable 41 foot Luhrs with an air conditioned salon and free dockside transfers, marked down because its rates live on the booking platform and no single owner captain is named. Key Largo Fishing Adventures at 7.6 runs two well equipped 38 foot boats with posted rates and a long record, held back by a rotating captain roster, and Round Up Fishing Charters, also at 7.6, fields the biggest hulls in the port, a 54 foot Bertram and a 43 foot Hatteras, but carries a rotating roster, a price that differs between its site and the booking platform, and a small hard cluster of poor reviews. Sea Spirit Offshore Fishing at 7.4 is the experienced owner operator on a 43 foot Torres, held back by an older hull and a site that hides its price.

Below them, Lock It Up Charters at 7.3 is the value pick, a small new center console with the largest, cleanest review record in the port but a 24 foot hull that limits it to the reef and the nearshore water. Miss Chief Charters at 6.9 is the mixed owner run boat, fair on price but on the oldest and slowest hull in the field and carrying an unresolved owner complaint. The Sailors Choice party boat at 6.5 is the budget option, the only head boat in the port, cheap and all included on a packed rail with a heavy push for tips.
