Gag grouper opens for a narrow window, September 1 to 14 in state waters and September 1 to October 1 in federal waters in 2026. Closer to shore, king mackerel run the reefs and wrecks in the spring and fall and cobia move through on the spring migration, both reachable on a shorter trip. Outriggers runs the largest private boat, the 40 foot Nice One sportfisher, also from Marina Jack, while In 2 Deep, Neptune, and Sarasota Reef fish capable center consoles in the 27 to 29 foot range from the downtown marina and the public ramps. The smaller boats are fast and fine for the nearer and mid range grounds but more exposed on a long Gulf run, where the larger sportfishers ride better. Most are owner run by a named captain, which on this coast matters more than the hull, since the captain’s read of the reefs and ledges makes the day.

The Sarasota field splits cleanly into private boats and the one party boat operation, and the private boats take the top four spots.
