Georgia deep sea fishing: the reefs and the Gulf Stream run

What you fish off Georgia, and when

The fishing off Georgia breaks into layers by distance, because the shelf is so wide and shallow. Close to the beach, king and Spanish mackerel, cobia, and sharks work the nearshore through the warm months. The heart of it is the middle layer, the artificial reefs and live bottom 15 to 40 miles out, where black sea bass is the staple, open the entire fishing year and coming home on nearly every trip, with vermilion snapper, gag grouper, triggerfish, and amberjack on the same structure on their own federal schedules. The outer layer is the Gulf Stream, 60 miles and more offshore, where mahi mahi, wahoo, tuna, and sailfish hold from July into September, reached only on the long full day and overnight runs.

Red snapper is the one to check before you count on it. The fish are thick on the Georgia reefs, but the South Atlantic season is tightly restricted and the rules moved again in 2026: Georgia set a short state permit season for the summer, then a federal court paused the South Atlantic permits in May, so as of mid 2026 harvest in federal waters is closed and the snapper are mostly caught and released. The bottom fishing fills the box the rest of the year, so there is no dead season here, just a closer, rougher one through the winter when the long Gulf Stream run is weather dependent.

Savannah and the Georgia coast

Nearly all of Georgia’s deep sea fishing runs from one place: Savannah and Tybee Island, where the fleet leaves from Tybee Island and the Bull River, about 20 minutes east of downtown Savannah. It is a small, mostly private field, four boats ranked of nine assessed and scored on the same national standard as every other port on the site, anchored by a family operation that has run the coast since 1956 and is the only one rigged for the full Gulf Stream program. The honest backdrop is scope: several of the most reviewed boats that market to Savannah actually launch from Midway, about 30 miles south, and the town has a large inshore fleet working the sounds for redfish and trout, so the genuine Savannah and Tybee deep sea field is smaller than a search makes it look. The rest of the Southeast Atlantic

Georgia sits at the southern end of our Southeast Atlantic coast.
