South Carolina deep sea fishing: the long run to the Gulf Stream

What you fish in South Carolina, and when

The defining fact of South Carolina deep sea fishing is the distance to the Gulf Stream. The blue water sits 50 to 80 miles off the beach here, farther than almost anywhere on the Atlantic, so a true offshore day for mahi mahi, wahoo, tuna, sailfish, and the odd marlin is a full run of 11 to 12 hours, best from late spring through fall when the seas lay down. Closer in, the reefs and wrecks are the year round backbone: black sea bass much of the year, with vermilion snapper, grouper, and triggerfish on the bottom, and king and Spanish mackerel and sharks on the troll. The spring cobia run through Port Royal Sound, off Hilton Head, is a Lowcountry signature.

Red snapper is the one to check before you count on it. The fish are abundant on the South Carolina ledges, but the South Atlantic recreational season has been closed through 2026 after a federal court order halted the brief state seasons the region had planned. The bottom fishing fills the box the rest of the year, so there is no dead season here, just a closer in one through the winter when the long Gulf Stream run is weather dependent.

The South Carolina ports compared

Three ports run the coast, and they split by how far offshore they fish and what the fleet looks like. Myrtle Beach leads, the strongest non Florida destination on the site, with walk on head boats for a cheap seat and private boats for the long Gulf Stream run off the Grand Strand. Charleston is all private with no party boat, the bigger sportfishers built for the offshore troll for tuna, sailfish, and marlin out of Shem Creek. Hilton Head, at the south end in the Lowcountry, is mostly a reef and bottom port with two budget party boats and the spring cobia run, and only its best equipped boats make the long haul to the Stream.

Getting around the South Carolina coast

The coast runs from the Grand Strand in the north down to the Georgia line, and each port has its own airport within easy reach. Myrtle Beach sits at the north end, its fleet split between North Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet, and Little River, with Myrtle Beach International close by. Charleston is the middle of the coast, the fleet out of Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant a few minutes from downtown and its airport. Hilton Head anchors the south end, about 45 minutes from Savannah and its airport across the Georgia line and roughly two hours from Charleston.
